HOW SOME SPORTING LEGENDS STARTED WITH A SMALL GIFT

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Just imagine if your son was tennis great, Pete Sampras or golfing legend, Gary Player?  Just think about if you were the parents of Steffi Graf or Annika Sorenstam?

No doubt, talent, commitment, perseverance, dedication, courage and a little luck are all necessary for someone to become a champion, but every champion has to start somewhere – and in the background (and sometimes the foreground!), there’s parental involvement.

In order to buy his son a set of golf clubs, Gary Player’s dad had to take out a loan.  As a young girl, Annika Sorenstam was talented at many sports, including tennis, soccer and skiing, but golf was to be her game.  But it wasn’t handed to her on a plate – she had to share her first set of clubs with her sister, only getting the clubs with odd numbers (such as a 5 and 7 iron).  It’s the same with Pete Sampras.  His discovery of an old tennis racquet in the basement at the age of three sparked his interest, and he started to hit balls against the wall from then on.

These stories show us that everyone – even the most talented sportsmen – have something that ignites their interest.  It may have been the basement discovery for Sampras and for Player, perhaps it was his father’s sacrifice.

Perhaps we can all learn from those stories – especially when it comes to giving gifts to our children.  Perhaps we should be looking at gifts that have more meaning, more purpose?  Many of us fall into the trap of getting the latest toys and novelties (which often just break or get lost) when perhaps there is something that they could get that would put them on a more meaningful journey.  And who knows, greatness could be around the corner!

Instead of a new MP3 player, what about a tennis racquet?   Some golf clubs instead of a new handbag?  Instead of video games, how about a surfboard instead?

And on the subject of surfboards, it was the gift of a proper pine surfboard from his father that ignited LeRoy Grannis’ passion for the sport.  He developed his passion and became an internationally acclaimed surf photographer, recognized worldwide as the ‘godfather of surf photography’.

From surfboards to tennis racquets, golf clubs to cricket bats – a gift can change a life.

So if the gift of opportunity appeals to you – where do you begin?  The internet is a good place – and you could research some online gift retailers for inspiration.  Gift certificates for a huge range of experiences, including golf lessons (for budding Gary Players) and surfing lessons – as well as many other inspirational activities.

Whether you live where the surf’s up or where the golf course is around the corner, from a gift in Sydney to a gift in New York, there’s a world of opportunity out there.  And who knows – it may just be the start of a life-changing journey!

The Five Best Harry Potter Costumes

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Since the first Harry Potter book was released in 1997, children and adults alike have come under the spell of this boy wizard and his life at Hogwarts School. The first book was titled “Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone. Since then there have been six more novels and, of course, they have been made into movies. The books have given us a magical world full of witchcraft and wizardry. And let’s not forget the novel game of quidditch!

The whole theme of Harry Potter and Hogwarts is perfectly suited to Halloween. It gives us many outfits to choose from. Let me present you with my five favorite costumes from the world of Harry Potter that you might find great for trick or treating.

1.    Dementors. This has to be one of the scariest costumes around as befits these foul soul-sucking creatures that guard the wizard prison of Azkaban. These creatures have a human shape, are at least ten feet tall and wear dark, hooded cloaks that reveal their horrible grey and decayed hands. They look very gruesome with holes where their mouths should be and no eyes. They are similar to vampires but in this case feed off people’s emotions rather than their blood. They suck out the soul of a person. These are nasty and frightening creatures so are great to dress up for Halloween.

2.    Voldemort. Lord Voldemort is the arch-enemy of Harry Potter. He is the most vile and feared wizard. He is totally lacking in human feelings. Unlike most human beings he doesn’t want love or friendship. What he does seek is power and immortality. He is totally ruthless and will do anything to achieve his goals. Apparently he was once very handsome but his vile character has turned him into a monster. Now he has red eyes, no nose and a slit where his nostrils should be. He has no hair ahd his teeth are yellow. His fingernails are long and blue and he is thin and tall. His attire is a long black robe. He has a wand with a bone handle.

3.    Death Eaters. These creatures are followers of Voldemort and are a band of witches and wizards who engage in malevolent crimes. They have a dark mark on their left forearms, a sign given to them by Voldemort and by which they recognize each other. They typically wore black, hooded robes and masks, but in the film, Goblet of Fire they wore skull masks with pointed hats and in the Order of the Phoenix wore metal masks and purple robes.

4.   The Gryffindor Robe. This is the robe worn by the members of Gryffindor House such as Harry, Ron and Hermione. It’s a long black robe with attached hood. The lining of the robe is burgundy. The Gryffindor crest on the front is of a lion rampant in scarlet and gold which symbolizes the characteristics of the house – courage, bravery, daring and chivalry.

5.    The Quidditch Robe This is the robe worn by the players of Quidditch, a fictional sport created by J K Rowling. Quidditch is very dangerous but a very fast and thrilling game. The wizards are in two teams and fly on broomsticks. The goal is to score points by throwing the Quaffle (a ball) through the hoops and to try to capture the golden snitch. The Quidditch robe is crimson with a yellow lining. It’s ankle length.

Those are my personally favorite Harry Potter costumes. I hope it’s given you some ideas for Halloween.

Build Photovoltaic Solar Panels At Home

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

In case you have been planning on installing solar panels for homes to economize in your utility payments, I would say ‘don’t’. The reality is that to purchase a solar panel it would cost you a couple of thousand bucks at minimum and with an preliminary investment of so much cash, it would take you a very long time to get the money back from the savings on your utility bills. If, however, you have been to construct photo voltaic panels at residence than you’d be on the best track. It can save you cash with a really small preliminary investment and see the savings very quickly.

To construct your personal photovoltaic solar  panel you may want a few hundred dollars for the components and a great manual to indicate you how one can do it. What you do not want is any particular skills or experience. If you happen to’ve got a very good handbook, all of the elements and some spare time, you’re good to go.

While it is extremely practical to save money with just one panel, don’t suppose that you’re going to make enough electricity for all your needs or that you’ll make sufficient to pass back to the utility firm (wouldn’t that be an important change – having them pay you!). However you can make sufficient energy to make a big impact in your utility costs every year.

In fact, the more sunny days you get in your neighbourhood, the more a photovoltaic solar panel will work for you. If you wish to mount the panels on your roof just guantee that your roof will get full exposure to the sun. If your roof is blocked by tress or other houses or buildings chances are youll need to rethink the placement with your panels.

You can mount the panels just above the bottom too, although they are going to be more prone to damage from children, and animals. But if that is your only option than it may nonetheless work.

A photovoltaic solar  panel is basically a large box that holds the photovoltaic cells.  The panel is roofed with Plexiglas or regular glass to protect the solar cells from damage. Whereas it is doable to make your individual solar cells at home, most homeowners would be higher off buying the solar cells and constructing the panel themselves. This is probably the most price efficient technique since constructing the solar cells could be difficult.

So, get to it. Start now and construct solar panels for homes. It can save you money in your utility bills, go inexperienced, and have some cool bragging rights along with your friends.

Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter Review

One of the satiesfied customer share their review on this scooter :

When my 11-year old started begging for an electric scooter, we were very hesitant. A neighbor has one and it’s the stand-up kind with a very loud noise from it’s motor that drives us nuts on the weekends. We gave in, and went shopping. While we were reviewing the standing scooter, we noticed the Razor Pocket Mod Electric Scooter and Amazingly, it was the SAME PRICE! I, of course, thought it was adorable and my daughter would easily swayed.

It was easy to put together and charge, however pumping the tires was a wee bit difficult just because of the angle required. The tires are nice and fat/sturdy too, makes riding offroad or over small rocks wasn’t an issue. The biggest thing we noticed though, was that it is Surprisingly QUIET! What a blessing compared to the neighbor’s noisy scooter! It practically ‘purrs’ and you don’t even hear it until you are right next to it.

Seeing her ride it is amazing! It is VERY easy for any child that can balance and ride a bike. The handle brakes/gas takes a bit of getting used to, but after a few days she was a pro! Her papa rides a motorcycle, so he was dying to check it out. Weighing in about 180lbs, he could ride it as well! My daughter got a big kick out of that.

The battery lasts quite a while! An hour may not sound like a lot of time, but if it’s not continuous (kids stop/start chat/ride/play) it can last hours. We could charge the scooter quickly and easily, and it’s small and fits well in the side of the garage. Though she’s 11, we were told by the salesman that younger kids as long as she could responsible can definitely ride it.

It IS fast, though, which was a bit unnerving at first. It doesn’t sound like 15 MPH is that fast (I think that’s what it is), but when you see your child going down a hill that fast – it’s quite scary! It doesn’t turn quite as sharply as a bike or standing scooter can, so they must learn it’s limitations. Definitely she should get a helmet and kneepads!

This is the BEST ITEM we have purchased for her in YEARS! Highly recommended!
